Thanks for supporting the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City and helping us further our mission of improving the quality of life for those affected by brain injury. In its 28th year, The Amy Thompson Run for Brain Injury has become an annual tradition for many Kansas Citians who knew Amy Thompson, were familiar with her story, or who have a loved one who has sustained a brain injury. Thompson, a Kansas City native, was shot in the head on Halloween night in 1986 at the age of 23. Against great odds, Thompson survived the attack, major surgery, and a six-week coma. Her courage and faith were an inspiration to everyone. Thompson’s family and friends marveled when she gave her first wink, uttered her first word, and took her first step following her injury. She spent more than three years fighting the battle of living life after her brain injury and died Christmas night in 1989. Thompson was an avid runner, which prompted her friend Molly Scanlon Beebe to organize the first Amy Thompson Run to Daylight in 1988. The race started as an effort to show Thompson how much her friends loved her. It continues today in memory of Thompson and the inspiration she was to others. Proceeds are used to fund programs to support and educate survivors of brain injury, their families and the professionals who treat them.
